MEANING OF FOOD
Food is eaten to be healthy and for survival.Food is any nutritous substance which people or animals eat or drink or which plants absorb in order to sustain life and growth.
BALANCED DIET
Balanced diet is any food rich in all the six classes of food which are:
- carbohydrate
- protein
- fats and oils
- vitamins
- minerals
- salt
- water.
THE IMPORTANCE OF BALANCED DIET
Balanced diet helps in teeth formation, bone formation, movement of food particles in the body, digestion, growth, health and longevity of life.
- Raw food stuffs are to be kept in the store of houses and fridges .
- quantities of cooked food ready to be eaten as break fast, launch or dinner are better left in the pots.
- Food to be eaten later are better kept in fridges and freezers.
- Drinking water are boiled and purified.
- Sachet or table water must have been treated and packaged under NAFDAC recommended conditions.
8 WAYS TO TAKE CARE OF COOKING AND EATING ENVIRONMENT
- The kitchen , dinning section and tables are to be kept clean.
- Cooking utensils, cuttleries, plates and cups are to be neatly kept in kitchens.
- The dinning table should be near the kitchen.
- Food is eaten on the dinning table, food should not be taken to the rooms or eaten in the palour.
- The dinning table is to be well laid, with dinning chairs arranged round the dinning table.
- Cooking utensils, cutleries, plates and cups should be washed after each meal and safely tucked away in racks or trays.
- The kitchen cabinets are to be dried and the kitchen swept clean to avoid attracting flies, cockroaches and lizards.
- High levels of hygiene and sanitation standards are to be maintained to stay safe from germs, viruses, parasites, infections, sickness and diseases.
10 RULES TO OBSERVE WHEN EATING
- Hands and cutleries are to be properly washed.
- Only the quantity needed at a given time should be eaten. Overfeeding is to be checked.
- Aprons and collar drapes are to be won where available especially, when dressed for work or occasions.
- Food intake should not be rushed or swallowed hurriedly to avoid spillage on the clothes.
- Talking should be minimized to avoid chocking or particles going the wrong way.
- Water should be taken at intervals.
- Appetizers and deserts, where available are to be taken before and after meals respectively.
- Eating heavy meals are to be avoided.
- Food is to be eaten at specific periods of morning, afternoon and nights.
- In-between meals are not advisable.Self control and restraint in food intake is advised.
