MEANING OF TOWN UNION’S MEETING

Every town has a Union. It is an organisation that oversees its daily affairs. The members of the town agree to be bound and abide by a body of rules and regulations of how to internally manage themselves and run their affairs . Their origins are in the land of their birth-famillies, hamlets, villages or towns.

PURPOSES AND BENEFITS OF THE MEETING

They serve various purposes, the benefits of which are as follows:

  • knowing each other better
  • knowing one another’s businesses or trade
  • networking for their mutual benefits
  • Assistance in the areas of births, marriages,  deaths, burials, employment, trade, cooperatives, cultures, traditions, security, health, sanitation,recreations etc.

Those who live in the cities organise and form themselves into such unions in their areas of residence and domicile. They make things easy, convenient and comfortable for themselves. They sow uniforms, take registration fees, levies and meet periodically at chosen or designated venues.

Communication is very important to them. Town unions disseminate relevant and useful information amongst themselves. The date of their meetings is usually first sundays of every month. They hold elections amongst themselves for officers to pilot their affairs. Almost every race or creed is organized in this way.

  • Champions the cause peace in the community
  •  Ensures unity among members of the community
  • Promotes prosperity and growth
  • Speeds up fund raising efforts for projects.

The Yoruba’s call it ‘Porapo’.The Igbo’s call it Ogbako Umunna. The different unions in the city and the village form themselves into Federated Unions and return to their towns for once in a year for the meetings.In Igbo land,its usually in the month of August.This is why it is called August meeting. It is an important organ of leadership, constituted authority and pressure group. It is highly recommended.
